CoCounsel Next runs the research and calls Nimble for web content

Thomson Reuters runs the Multinational Agent in CoCounsel Next. The agent splits a lawyer's question into topics and gives each topic to a subagent, which is a smaller agent that researches one topic. Each subagent calls Nimble to find sources and to read them in full. Thomson Reuters decides what to search, what to keep and what to read.

Thomson Reuters (CoCounsel) Nimble API call

Who does what in one research run

Thomson Reuters · step 1

A lawyer asks a question

“How have France and Germany transposed Article 9 of Directive 2004/48/EC into their patent law?”

Article 9 of the EU directive on enforcing intellectual property rights covers provisional and precautionary measures, such as preliminary injunctions.

Thomson Reuters · step 2

The Multinational Agent splits the question into six topics

Each topic covers one jurisdiction and goes to its own subagent. Each subagent writes its queries in the language of its sources.

EU
The text of Article 9 of Directive 2004/48/EC eur-lex.europa.eu · English
EU
Court of Justice rulings that interpret Article 9 curia.europa.eu · English
France
Loi n° 2007-1544 of 29 October 2007, the French law that transposed the directive legifrance.gouv.fr · French
France
Article L615-3 of the Intellectual Property Code on provisional measures in patent cases legifrance.gouv.fr · French
Germany
§ 140d of the Patent Act on securing damage claims gesetze-im-internet.de · German
Germany
Preliminary injunctions under §§ 935 to 945 of the Code of Civil Procedure gesetze-im-internet.de · German
Option 1 Nimble · step 3 · Extraction Template

An Extraction Template searches one specific domain

An Extraction Template is a Nimble endpoint built for one website. The search template runs the site's own search engine and returns the matching pages.

Input
Search words in the site's language
Returns
A list of result URLs, each with its label, section, statute and snippet
Example
einstweilige Verfügung Streitgegenstand on gesetze-im-internet.de returns § 935 ZPO and § 942 ZPO
Option 2 Nimble · step 3 · Search

Nimble Search covers every domain in the input list

Search runs the query across all the approved domains that the subagent sends. Approved domains are the sites Thomson Reuters allows for each jurisdiction.

Input
Query, list of approved domains, country and language
Returns
Up to 10 results, each with a URL, a title and a snippet of about 2,000 characters
Example
L615-3 mesures provisoires brevet on legifrance.gouv.fr

The subagent can use option 1 wherever a template exists for the site, and option 2 on any list of approved domains. A topic can use both.

Thomson Reuters · step 4

CoCounsel reviews the URLs and snippets

The subagent reads each URL, title and snippet against its topic. It keeps the relevant URLs and drops the rest.

Nimble · step 5 · Extract

Extract returns the full page for each relevant URL

Input
The URLs the subagent kept
Returns
The full page text as markdown. For a PDF, the PDF parser returns the document text.
Volume
Batch mode accepts up to 1,000 URLs in one call
Thomson Reuters · step 6

CoCounsel checks the full text and writes the answer

Each subagent checks its claims against the full text and returns the exact passages. The Multinational Agent combines the six topics and writes the answer with a citation to each source.

The question and topics are an illustration. The query style follows a live CoCounsel run that Anurag Chatterjee shared on 22 September.
